In a study by University College London, 199 healthy men and women were given a computer task designed to put them under stress. At the start of the study, they were tested for various heart disease risk factors including levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol and "good" HDL cholesterol. When tested afterward, some showed a marked rise in cholesterol levels, including the bad LDL type which can damage blood vessels and limit circulation, leading to heart disease. Three years after the test, those whose levels had risen most still had higher levels. Scientists are continually discovering more and more ways in which stress can affect our physical and mental health health. Australian researchers from Sydney's Garvan Institute have recently found that a hormone released into the body during times of stress undermined the body's immune system and literally made you sick and they were trying to develop an anti-stress drug treatment. If those same scientists had bothered to look, they would have discovered that the best remedy for stress has existed for many years; it's called meditation. Meditation has been proven to promote deep relaxation, reduce anxiety and muscle tension and it increases production of serotonin. Low levels of serotonin may cause feelings of depression and anxiety. There are hundreds of different types of meditation but probably the most effective for with stress-relief is the insight type like the Power of Stillness Technique. Instead of repeating a meaningless word or sound over and over again, the insight type meditation allows you to stand back and look at your thoughts in a non-emotional way so that you learn to react less to the things that cause you to feel "stressed". Of course meditation can't be patented so they'll continue to search for a chemical cure which can be sold for millions of Dollars. There are many different types of meditation, some take years to learn, others require the flexibility of an Olympic gymnast.
